J VISAS
Students, trainees, teachers and others are eligible to apply for J1 visas to participate in
educational and cultural exchange programs designated by the Department of State. Qualified
sponsors include government agencies, international organizations of which the United States
is a member, and reputable organizations which are U.S. citizens. Program sponsors must be
accepted by the Department of State Exchange Visitor Program Office before they can sponsor
participants. J visa holders are admitted to study, work or engage in training depending
on the terms of the program they are participating in; limits on duration of stay depend
on the type of program. In some cases, J visa holders must return to their home country
for two years before they can apply for permanent residence unless they obtain a waiver
of this requirement. J visa applicants must prove that they intend to return to their
home country upon completion of their program. The spouses and children of J visa
holders are eligible for J2 visas.
