Religious Workers Visas (R)
Members of religious denominations which have a bona fide, nonprofit
religious organization in the U.S. may obtain R visas to work as a
minister, or in a professional or non-professional position related
to a traditional religious function. In order to qualify, the worker
must have been a member of the religious denomination for at least two
years preceding entry. R visa applicants need not prove that they have
prior experience, and do not need to maintain a foreign residence during
their stay in the United States, which can be up to five years. R visa
holders who will work without compensation must show that they have adequate
financial resources to support themselves during their stay. The spouse and
children of R visa holders are eligible for R2 visas.
